South America — From the Caribbean to Patagonia
South America contains some of Earth's most remarkable natural environments. The Andes form the world's longest continental mountain range, while the Amazon Basin contains the planet's largest tropical rainforest and one of its greatest river systems. The continent also includes the Atacama Desert, the grasslands of the Pampas, enormous wetlands, tropical islands, high plateaus, and the dramatic landscapes of Patagonia.
South America's countries reflect centuries of Indigenous civilizations, migration, cultural exchange, exploration, and global connections. Spanish and Portuguese are the most widely spoken languages, while hundreds of Indigenous languages and traditions remain an essential part of the continent's cultural identity.
Learning about these 12 countries gives us another important part of the larger picture of our world and shows how geography, language, history, nature, culture, and people remain deeply connected across borders.
