Part 6 — Oceania

Oceania is a vast geographic region extending across the Pacific Ocean. It includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and thousands of islands scattered across Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Although its land area is relatively small compared with several other world regions, Oceania covers an enormous expanse of the planet when its surrounding ocean is considered.

In Part 6 of The Countries of the World Collection, we explore the 14 sovereign countries commonly grouped within Oceania through their capitals, locations, official or widely used languages, currencies, populations, and national flags.

Editorial Note: This article includes the 14 sovereign countries commonly classified within Oceania. The region also contains numerous territories and associated states that are not counted separately within the 195-country framework used for this collection. Geographic classifications may vary among sources, and population figures are approximate and may change over time.

Oceania — A World Connected by the Pacific

Oceania is unlike any other region of the world. Its countries are separated by enormous distances of ocean, yet generations of Pacific peoples have connected these islands through navigation, migration, trade, language, family relationships, and cultural traditions.

The region contains remarkable natural environments, including Australia's deserts and tropical forests, New Zealand's mountains and fjords, Papua New Guinea's highlands and rainforests, and thousands of volcanic and coral islands scattered across the Pacific.

Oceania is also home to extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity. Indigenous peoples developed sophisticated traditions of ocean navigation long before modern navigational instruments, traveling across vast stretches of the Pacific by observing stars, waves, winds, currents, wildlife, and other signs of the natural world.

Exploring these 14 countries completes our journey through the six geographic regions used in this collection and prepares us for the final part of the series — bringing the countries of the entire world together in one A–Z reference.
